Gossiping is commonly thought of as harmful to relationships, but few people realize that it can also damage your career. If you participate in office gossip, you may face negative consequences such as being passed over for promotions, projects being sabotaged, and co-workers backstabbing you. In addition, your boss and other employees will likely form a bad opinion of you. Therefore, if you find yourself caught up in workplace gossip, try to break free from it and focus on your job duties. Here are five things to keep in mind when confronted with office gossip:

1. The Negative Effects of Gossiping

Gossiping is highly tempting when everyone else is doing it. You may believe that chatting about other people is merely amusing, but it can lead to significant damage. Gossiping might result in office politics, backstabbing, and even sabotage. It can potentially make you look bad in the eyes of your employer and co-workers. If you must gossip, do it offline and away from work. Keep in mind that negative gossip will only make you look bad in the long run.
